Family Landlords Raise the Rent to Force One Sister Out

“You are being stubborn, Lauren,” she said, her voice dropping its warm tone. “We are offering you a way to stay in your home.”

“I have my own plans,” I said, standing up from the table and reaching for my coat.

My father did not look up as I walked out of the dining room, his thumb still tracing the leather of his key fob.

Twenty minutes later, I stood in my own kitchen, the apartment quiet except for the hum of the heater.

I opened the cabinet under the sink and pulled out the small plastic bin, reaching for the yellow paper I had tucked behind the liner.

By Thursday morning, that receipt was tucked safely into the zippered pocket of my laptop bag.

I sat at my desk at nine o’clock, staring at the empty spaces in my filing cabinet where my quarterly utility statements usually lived.

The room was quiet, save for the low hum of the refrigerator down the hall.
