Family Landlords Raise the Rent to Force One Sister Out

“I found the letter from your old building manager in the recycling bin before we moved your bags,” I said, keeping my voice flat. “The notice said you were subletting the second bedroom on an app for ninety dollars a night while telling Mom you lived alone.”

Vanessa froze, her fingers gripping the neck of the water bottle. “It was my apartment. I had every right to make a little extra money to cover my costs.”

“It was illegal under your lease, and it got you kicked out in ten days,” I said.

“You are always so quick to judge,” Vanessa said, turning around with a dramatic sigh. “Mom understands that I was just trying to survive. She doesn’t hold it over my head like you do.”

“Mom paid for your new suitcases too,” I said.

“I am not talking about this anymore,” Vanessa said, snatching her sunglasses off her head and throwing them onto the counter. “You owe me eighty-one dollars for the food.”

“I am not paying for it,” I said, turning toward the hallway.
