Family Landlords Raise the Rent to Force One Sister Out

I pressed the red button on my screen, cutting her off in the middle of her next sentence.

I picked up my phone and walked into the living room, where Vanessa was waiting.

She was holding a gray metal box with twelve push buttons on the front, her fingers tracing the numbers. She set it down on the entryway table next to my mail.

“You are being incredibly selfish,” Vanessa said, letting out another high sigh. “You are ruining everything because you cannot handle the fact that Mom and Dad wanted to do something nice for me.”

“Giving you my home is not doing something nice for you,” I said. “It is taking from me to fund your life.”

“It is my house now,” she said.

“Then you can pay the mortgage yourself,” I said.

I went to the hallway closet and pulled out the four flat cardboard boxes I had purchased at the shipping store on my lunch break. I carried them into the living room and laid them on the rug.
