Margaret Walks Across the High School Stage on a Warm June Morning
“We have one more name to call before we begin the presentation of the class,” the board president said, his voice booming through the gym. “To accept the honorary diploma for Olivia Miller, we invite her mother, Margaret, to the stage.”
My heart seemed to stop, the sound of my own name echoing off the high brick walls of the gym. I looked at Brian, whose eyes were bright with wetness as he smiled at me for the first time in months.
“Go,” Brian whispered, releasing my hand. “Go get it for her, Margaret.”
I stood up, my legs feeling like lead, but my posture straight as I stepped into the aisle. The walk down the long center aisle felt endless, the metal chairs on either side blurring into a long line of faces I had known for thirty years. As I passed, parents nodded, and the seniors in their green and orange wigs clapped, the sound of their palms matching the steady rhythm of my steps.
I walked up the wooden stairs at the side of the stage, my shoes making a hollow sound on the steps.
