Margaret Walks Across the High School Stage on a Warm June Morning

The guard looked at the seal on the top of the page, then back at Arthur, his hand hovering over the worn yellow legal pad. He did not touch the paper, but his shoulders dropped slightly, the authority draining from his posture in an instant.

“I just do what the principal tells me to do,” the guard muttered.

“Then you will want to do this correctly,” Arthur said, stepping aside to let me pass through the threshold first.

“He is in his office,” the guard said, pointing toward the hallway.

We walked into the heat of the gymnasium, where the smell of fresh floor wax and old varnish hung heavy in the humid air. Hundreds of metal folding chairs had been set up in long, straight rows, divided by a wide center aisle that led directly to the wooden stage. A large banner with the school colors hung from the steel rafters, moving slightly in the draft from the massive industrial fans in the corners.
