Margaret Walks Across the High School Stage on a Warm June Morning
Vance leaned forward over his desk on the stage, his face tightening. “Miss Benson, please use the stage microphone for the official address.”
“This is not the official address,” Kayla said, looking around at her classmates, who were all watching her with a strange, quiet intensity. “This is for the person who should be standing next to me today.”
A sudden, heavy quiet fell over the entire room, the kind of silence that makes the hum of the ceiling fans sound like a roar. Beside me, Brian’s hand tightened on mine until it was almost painful, his eyes fixed on Kayla’s back.
“Our class was told that today was about looking forward,” Kayla said, her voice rising with a passionate, raw energy that seemed to shake the quiet air. “We were told that some memories are too heavy for a ceremony like this. But joy does not belong only to the people who are still standing here. Olivia should have been here to laugh with us.”
Vance stepped toward the edge of the stage, his hand moving to his pocket where his phone lay. “Miss Benson, that is enough. Sit down so we can proceed with the presentation of the diplomas.”
