Blue Cotton Work Shirts Stitched Together for a Spring Dance

He jangled his heavy brass key fob, the metal clicking against his knuckle as he watched me approach.

“Hey, Nicole,” Gary called out, his voice carrying over the noise of the crowded corridor.

“I heard your aunt is having a clearance sale on floor rags this week.”

I did not stop walking, keeping my eyes fixed on the yellow lines painted on the floor tiles.

“My cousin says the sewing shop is going under because of the roof,” Gary said, raising his voice so the girls by the trophy case turned to look.

“Are you going to wear one of your dad’s old grease towels to the dance, or did the bank take those too?”

A couple of the track runners laughed, one of them turning his back to me as I passed.

“She is probably going to use the green floor wax rags,” Gary said, his key fob clinking against the metal fountain.

“They match her eyes.”

I kept my hand on my strap and walked past locker 114 without looking at the brand new brass hinge Albert had put on it.
