Blue Cotton Work Shirts Stitched Together for a Spring Dance

My father lay still under the white sheet, his eyes closed, his chest no longer moving.

There was no sound in the room except for the quiet hum of the heating vent in the wall.

“He went very quiet, Nicole,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she reached across the bed to touch his arm.

I walked closer, looking at his face, which looked peaceful and smooth for the first time in months.

The deep lines around his eyes seemed to have faded, and his hands were still.

A nurse with a quiet tread stepped into the room, her rubber-soled shoes squeaking on the polished floor.

She looked at Clara, then at me, her face soft and serious.

She reached out to the silver rod on the wall beside the bed.

With a soft, metallic click, she quietly pulled the green curtain closed around the head of the bed.

I stood in the narrow space, my eyes fixed on the empty space where my father had been.

I stared at the vacant hospital bed, the green plastic oxygen tube lying coiled on the empty mattress.
