Blue Cotton Work Shirts Stitched Together for a Spring Dance
I kept my head down, carrying my biology textbook close to my chest as I walked past the row of blue lockers.
The steam radiators clanked in the corners, filling the damp air with the smell of hot iron and old dust.
Gary, holding his heavy brass key fob, was leaning against locker 114 with three other boys from the varsity track team.
He jangled the keys against the metal door, the sharp clinking sound echoing in the corridor.
The brand new brass hinge on his locker door shone brightly under the hallway lights, silent while the other lockers rattled.
“Hey, Nicole,” Gary called out, his voice carrying over the crowd of students.
I kept walking, refusing to look at his face.
“Where is the sweep-master today?” Gary asked, stepping out into the middle of the hallway.
The other boys stopped talking, their eyes turning toward me as I tried to pass.
“The floors are looking pretty dusty,” Gary laughed, turning to his friends. “Maybe you should grab his broom and finish the job.”
One of the boys snickered, nudging Gary with his shoulder.
