“He was desperate,” she whispered, her fingers still working at the silver ring. “He said if we had the title, we could take out a bridge loan before the audit.”

I looked at the yellow legal pad sitting on the porch table, where I had written down the timeline of every bank transfer Cornelius had tried to make. That paper, along with the land trust deed Rebecca had filed, was the barrier he could not cross.

“I spoke to Rebecca,” I said. “The land trust is finalized, and the cabin is officially out of my name.”

Bula looked up, her cheeks wet with tears. “Are they going to arrest him here?”

The county road was quiet, but the silence between us felt heavier than any storm.

“I will not put my own daughter’s husband in jail, but you must leave this valley today,” I said.

Bula pressed her forehead against her knees, her shoulders shaking.

“I cannot stay with him if he goes to prison,” she whispered.
