Arthur Nelson Protected His Wyoming Mountain Cabin with a Trust

“They can smell food from miles away, so keep your distance,” Davis said.

“I do not plan on getting close,” I said. “I just want to know if they are likely to make a habit of the clearing.”

“If you are putting anything out there that draws them in, you are creating a hazard,” Davis said. “We get a complaint from a neighbor, or if a wolf gets too comfortable near a residence, we have to file an official report. Once a report is filed, the county gets involved, and we have to inspect the property.”

“There are no neighbors within three miles,” I said. “And the land behind my cabin is state timber.”

“Just keep the perimeter clean, Arthur,” Davis said, his voice dropping into that official safety warning tone again. “A pack of eight is not something you want on your porch when you go out to fetch wood in the dark.”

I thanked him and walked out into the cold morning air, the heavy timber door clicking shut behind me.
