Court Papers in the Locked Drawer of a Community Doctor

He finished chopping the vegetables and swept them into the glass bowl with the flat of the blade. The cucumber slices fell with a soft, wet sound.

“I only want the best for you,” he added, wiping the wooden board with a damp cloth. “Sometimes you forget that.”

Did he truly believe his own lie, or was this just a rehearsal for an audience he hadn’t met yet? I set the skillet lid down with a sharp clatter.

“Dinner is ready,” I said.

We ate our dinner at the small table near the window, the silence between us filled only by the scrape of forks. The window reflected our faces back at us, pale and distorted against the black night outside.

David checked his gold watch again, then set his cloth napkin beside his plate.

“We both need to get away from the house, Rachel, just the two of us,” he said.

“Where did you have in mind?” I asked, taking a small bite of the chicken.

“I was thinking we could drive up to the lake this weekend,” he said. “The autumn colors are at their peak near the water.”
