My Mother Recognized My Fake Fiance From an Autumn Night Five Years Ago

We walked back into the living room in silence. My mother was standing by the mahogany sideboard, her fingers adjusting the heavy pearl necklace at her throat before she turned to face us. My father sat in his leather armchair, his fingers tapping a rhythmic, dry beat against the padded armrest, his eyes fixed on the empty fireplace.

Christopher let his hands slip from his pockets as we entered. He stood near the edge of the Persian rug, his large frame casting a long shadow across the polished floorboards. He looked remarkably calm for a man who had just been accused of a crime in our dining room, though his thumb brushed his left coat lapel twice before he spoke.

“Please, sit down,” my mother said, her sharp, precise voice dropping into a softer, almost musical register that I had not heard in years. “Both of you. We have all let our emotions run away with us tonight.”

I looked at her, my hand instantly rising to my left thumb to twist my silver ring. This sudden shift in her tone was more alarming than her anger had been.
