Forty Thousand Dollars Demanded to Bring Our Lost Daughter Home

“Maybe Vince should come,” I said to George. “We do not know who we are meeting.”

George did not answer, his eyes fixed on the empty wooden table.

“The green John Deere is still hooked to the flatbed in the driveway,” George said after a long silence. “We need to move it before we leave tomorrow.”

“I can move it for you now,” Vince said, offering a quick nod.

“No,” George said, standing up. “I will handle the tractor. You just make sure your truck has gas.”

“I will have the tank full,” Vince said. “Just let me know when you are ready to load up.”

He walked toward the back door, his boots making a soft thud on the linoleum.

I followed him out to the driveway to see him off.

The red Ford truck was parked near the barn entrance, the engine dripping a small circle of dark oil onto the dry gravel.

As we reached the driver’s side, I noticed the front chrome bumper had a thick smear of bright yellow on the corner.
